Get MFA back after switching phones

When you switch phones, you lose the Microsoft Authenticator app and the codes stored in it. You can then no longer verify your sign-in the way you used to. Here are three ways to get your access back.

Method 1: Self-service online

  1. Go to aka.ms/mysecurityinfo on a PC.
  2. Sign in with your username and password.
  3. If you're asked for an MFA code, select I can't use my Microsoft Authenticator app right now or Sign in another way.
  4. Choose another verification method, for example SMS or email.
  5. Click Add sign-in method and select Authenticator app.
  6. Scan the QR code with Microsoft Authenticator on your new phone, and remove the old phone from the list.

Method 2: One-time code from the new phone

If you transferred the content from your old phone to the new one, the Authenticator app may still have your account.

  1. Open the Authenticator app on your new phone.
  2. Tap the entry with your company name. Your email address is usually shown right below it.
  3. The app shows a one-time code. Sign in with it.
  4. Go to aka.ms/mysecurityinfo and add the new phone as a method.

Method 3: Contact us

If none of the methods work, we can temporarily reset the MFA requirement on your account so you can sign in and register your new phone.

Once you have access again

  1. Download Microsoft Authenticator from the App Store or Google Play on your new phone.
  2. Sign in at aka.ms/mysecurityinfo.
  3. Click Add sign-in method and select Authenticator app.
  4. Follow the wizard, and test with a new sign-in.
