“Your license has expired”
If Word or Outlook says your license has expired or isn't assigned, the subscription isn't active on your account. The apps still open, but you can't save or create new documents.
Four common causes
- The subscription hasn't been renewed. The most common one. Contact us and we'll check the status and renew it.
- The license isn't assigned to your account. The license is paid for but not linked to you specifically, for example after a reorganization. We fix that quickly.
- You're signed in with the wrong account. See below.
- The account has been deactivated, at your company's request. Contact us.
Check that you're signed in with your work account
- Open Word or Outlook and click File and Account.
- Check which email address is shown under User Information.
- Even if the address is right, it may still be the wrong account. The same email address can have both a personal Microsoft account and a work account. Check that the subscription is a Business subscription.
- If it's the wrong account, click Sign out and sign in again. Choose Work or school account if asked.
Check your license status yourself
- Go to portal.office.com and sign in with your work account.
- Click your profile picture in the top right corner and select View account.
- Open Subscriptions. It lists the licenses linked to your account.
Keep working in the meantime
Go to office.com and sign in. Word, Excel and Outlook in the browser often work even when the installed apps complain. Save to OneDrive, so you don't lose anything.
When you contact us, have the email address in question and the text of the error message ready.
