Restart the router or switch

Routers and switches handle all the traffic on the network, all the time. Like a PC, they build up errors over time, and a restart clears them out. Always try a restart before you call us. It fixes a good share of all network problems.

The router

  1. Find the router's power cable, often a small black adapter in the wall socket.
  2. Unplug it, either from the router or from the wall socket.
  3. Wait 30 seconds so the memory clears completely.
  4. Plug it back in.
  5. Wait two to three minutes until the lights are steady green.
  6. Test the network.

Some routers have their own restart button, on the device or in the admin interface. You can use that instead.

The switch

A switch is a flat box with lots of network ports, usually without Wi-Fi. Unplug the power, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in and wait until the port lights are steady. If you have several switches in a chain, start with the one closest to the router.

The right order when everything needs a restart

  1. Turn everything off: access point first, then switch, router last.
  2. Wait 30 seconds.
  3. Turn things on in reverse order: router first, and wait until it's up. Then switch, access point last.
  4. Wait two to three minutes after the last device.

That way each device gets the right network information from the device above it.
