Guest network and sharing the Wi-Fi password
Many businesses let visitors, customers and tradespeople connect to the same Wi-Fi as their staff. That's a risk. A guest on the company network can see shared files and printers, and an infected PC can spread malware to the rest of the network, intentionally or not.
The solution is a separate guest network: a Wi-Fi network with its own name and password, where guests get internet access and nothing more. The traffic is kept completely separate from the company network.
Share the password safely
- Use a QR code. Guests scan the code with their phone and they're online, without typing anything. We'll make a QR code for your guest network that you can print and put up in reception or the meeting room.
- Give the guest network its own password. Never the same as the company network, and without the company name, address or other easy-to-guess words.
- Send it rather than putting it up. If you send the password by text message or email, delete the message afterwards. Don't write it on the whiteboard or put it up permanently on the wall.
Change the password regularly
Employees leave, suppliers change, and guests who knew the old password can come back. Change it at least every six months, when an external consultant finishes their assignment, and whenever you think the password has got out.
Networks from us
We use professional equipment from Ruckus and Ubiquiti, which supports several wireless networks as standard. If your company's network is from us, we set up a separate guest network with its own password, a QR code for sharing, automatic password changes and a speed limit, so guests don't eat into your bandwidth.
