Update Windows
Windows updates close security holes, fix bugs and make your PC faster. Out-of-date machines are where attacks most often succeed. Install updates at least once a week, or let them run automatically.
How to install updates
- Click Start and open Settings.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Click Download & install on whatever shows up.
- Click Restart now when the installation is done, or pick a time that suits you.
Save everything you're working on before the restart. The PC closes all programs.
Move the restart outside working hours
When a restart is pending, Windows Update shows the Schedule the restart button, where you can pick a time such as 10 p.m. Under Advanced options, set Active hours to your working hours, so Windows never restarts in the middle of the day.
Types of updates
| Type | What it is | How soon |
|---|---|---|
| Security updates | Close known holes | Right away |
| Quality updates | Bug fixes and stability | Within a week |
| Feature updates | New features, once a year | Can wait a few weeks |
| Driver updates | Update the hardware | When it suits you |
Word and Outlook update separately
The Microsoft 365 apps aren't updated through Windows Update. Open Word or Outlook, choose File, Account, Update Options and Update Now.
